Color Consultation | Knoxville, TN | ABK Interior

Color Consultation · Knoxville, TN

The most expensive mistake in painting is the color

Labor costs the same whether the color is right or wrong. Getting it wrong means living with it, or paying to do the room twice. ABK Interior walks your space, reads the light, and specs the palette before anyone opens a can.

Most painters hand you a swatch book. We tell you what belongs in the room.

Picking paint from a two-inch chip under fluorescent store lighting is guesswork, and it is the reason so many finished rooms feel slightly off in a way nobody can name. The color was never wrong on the card. It was wrong in that room, in that light, next to that floor.

Koby Hyde has spent years working in color as a professional artist, with more than 75 murals painted across the country. Color theory is not a bonus skill he picked up on the side. It is the thing he actually does, applied to the room you live in.

What goes wrong without one

Three failures we see constantly in Knoxville homes, all of them avoidable in a single walkthrough.

The warm neutral that turns grey

North-facing rooms get cool light all day. A warm neutral straight off the fan deck goes flat and grey on those walls. The fix is picking two steps warmer than what looked right on the card, which nobody tells you at the paint counter.

The color that fights the floor

Wall color does not exist on its own. It sits next to your flooring, your cabinets, and your trim. A greige that reads beautifully on white oak can go muddy and pink against a red-toned hardwood.

The sample-patch trap

A test patch on an existing wall is contaminated by the old color bleeding through and by whatever is next to it. People reject good colors and approve bad ones this way, then blame the painter.

How it works

One visit, no obligation, and you keep the plan whether or not you book the work.

  • We time the visit to the room

A dining room used at night and a home office used at 9am need different answers. Where it matters, we come when the room is actually in use, so the color gets judged in the light it will live in.

  • We read what is already there

Flooring, trim, cabinets, countertops, the big pieces of furniture staying in the room, and which direction the windows face. These constraints decide far more than personal taste does.

  • You describe the feeling, not the color

Calm, warm, brighter, cozier, more grown-up. Translating that into a specific sheen and a specific shade is our job, and it is a better starting point than a paint name you saw online.

  • You get a written palette

Specific colors and finishes for walls, ceiling, and trim, room by room, with the reasoning attached. Yours to keep, and usable by any painter even if you go elsewhere.

What you walk away with

  • Specific paint colors named for every surface, not a range to choose from
  • Sheen recommendations per surface, from ceiling flat to trim satin
  • Whole-home flow, so adjoining rooms do not clash at the doorway
  • Accent wall placement, if a room wants one
  • Honest guidance on which rooms to skip for now
  • A written plan you keep either way

Free with any full-room painting quote.

If you are getting a room or a whole house quoted, the color consultation is part of it at no extra cost. It is not an upsell and it is not contingent on booking the job. We would rather you get the color right and hire someone else than get it wrong and hire us.

Want the plan on its own, with no painting attached? That is available as a standalone visit. Call or text and we will sort out the details.

Common questions

Do I have to book painting to get a color consultation?

No. The consultation comes free with any full-room painting quote, and it is not contingent on booking the job. You keep the written palette either way. A standalone visit with no painting attached is also available.

How long does a color consultation take?

A single room is usually a short visit. A whole house takes longer because adjoining rooms have to be planned together so they do not clash at the doorway. We will tell you what to expect when you book.

Why does the direction my windows face matter?

North-facing rooms get cool light all day, which drains warmth out of a color and can make a warm neutral read flat and grey. South-facing rooms do the opposite. The same paint genuinely looks like two different colors in those two rooms, so the window direction changes which shade we pick.

I already picked a color I like. Can you just paint it?

Absolutely. If you have chosen a color, we will paint it. We will tell you if we think it will behave differently on your walls than it did on the chip, but it is your home and your call.

What makes an artist better at this than a painting contractor?

Koby Hyde works in color professionally as an artist and has painted more than 75 murals across the country. Choosing and mixing color is the core of that work rather than a side skill, which is why the recommendation accounts for light, undertone, and what the color sits next to instead of stopping at the swatch.
